Chaplain's Corner

September 2005

Last month my wife and I spent a Saturday evening at the Great Lakes Science center. First, we watched an incredible Imax production on the human body and how it operates. Watching as food was being digested in the stomach, while not pretty, showed how much work our body is doing all of the time. Yet we are totally unaware of most all of it. It’s a good thing too. I’d hate to be consciously aware of the millions of blood cells which are born each day, only to have that many more die.

The next part of the museum was dedicated to flesh and bones of the human body. A technique is used to plasticize real body parts, and we saw life from the very beginning as humans are created in the womb. (Don’t worry, nothing sinister was going on). From people who had died and offered their bodies to science, we marveled at how a woman’s twenty week old ‘fetus’ looks just like a real baby; because it is a real baby.

I was also excited to come across a kidney on display that had two urethras. Before I found out that I had two of them on one of my kidneys, I had no idea what a urethra was either.

Upon leaving the exhibit, Maureen and I marveled at the miraculous way each person is formed. Every one of us is a unique original. Yet, when we trust and have faith in Jesus Christ, we become one with him and others who believe as we do. Race no longer matters, brain injuries don't set us apart. And we are promised eternal rest and peace when this life on earth is ended. Oh, I don't think God is going to have us floating around on clouds strumming harps, although, there might be some musicians who do just that.

Think of it. We will have new bodies and completely transformed minds. No longer suffering from physical, mental, and emotional challenges, we will be working along with our friend Jesus, as He leads the way!
